For the next 10 months we will be inundated with the 2016 presidential race. Already this primary season has dominated the airways like no other in recent memory. Who will represent the Republican and Democratic parties, Trump, Cruz, Sanders or Clinton, or will one of the underdogs surprise us? Who is the best candidate to take the helm in the rough seas ahead?
Once again we’re hearing that this election is the most critical election ever with the future of our country hanging in the balance! Really? does this mean that if a certain candidate doesn’t win the country is doomed? Because of such beliefs (on both sides) the political climate is heating up and the war of words is on. Mudslinging, name calling, hateful rhetoric, is all becoming justified due to the cause. Even well-meaning Believers are getting caught up in the passion of the season with some losing their testimony in the name of righteousness. To lose our testimony while winning an argument is never justified or winning. Wisdom says we are to be “slow to speak and slow to become angry”(James 1:19). We should do our best to be informed, exercise our voice in different formats, and we should definitely vote.
Yes, the issues that face our country are serious, very serious. We see injustice everywhere, increasingly we see right becoming wrong and wrong right. This is frustrating. But if the hope of our country rests in a candidate alone then we have surely lost our way. Nowhere do we find in the Bible that they overcame by an election. God is the hope of our nation. If the Church continues in its backsliding and prayerlessness no matter who wins the election our Nation will continue its slide into the mire. Only God can bring about a change of course for our nation. It’s a privilege to pastor a church like New Song, a church willing to fast and pray for our City, State, and Nation. God is faithful and our prayers will not go unanswered.
The words of Ronald Reagan are truer than ever. “The time has come to turn to God and reassert our trust in Him for the healing of America….Our country is in need of and ready for a spiritual renewal…If we ever forget that we are One Nation under God, then we will be a Nation gone under.”
